Post #2 – Product Photography – Ojas Studio – NYC
This fall I was given the opportunity to be a part of a 3-day product photoshoot in NYC with Ojas Studio. I’ve done some product photography in the past, but not at this level, and not for full days on end. A few extra pieces of equipment, some direction, mixed with what I already knew was enough to land some great images. There was a quick learning curve and some kinks to work out, but once things started to roll everything ended up working out.
‘Ojas Studio’ is a new product (bite-sized snacks) developed to cater to those on the run, while also being conscious of an Ayurvedic lifestyle. Aryuveda in short terms, is one of the world’s oldest, holistic healing systems that is based off your ‘Dosha’. Vata, Pitta & Kapha, which are “mind-body” types, and each dosha expressed a unique blend of physical, emotional and mental characteristics.
Vata – Air + Ether
Pitta – Fire + Water
Kapha – Earth + Water
This new product takes these types of doshas into account and offers a snack with a specific set of ingredients to help keep your dosha in balance. Basically, a new kind of product that is more individualized to each consumer. The possible beginning of a new way of eating and living that has been around for thousands of years, but is just not generally well-known.
So, this photoshoot/video shoot (Video and lifestyle photography done by CHOATEHOUSE) obviously had to be thought through a little more in depth than some previous shoots I’ve done. There were a lot of different moving parts and more messages to convey. We had 3 models over 3 days in 3 different locations. The locations had to help describe and communicate each type of dosha in a way that the viewer could understand easily.
For example, Vata type personality was a bit more messy, in a rush, creative and “airy” – So the set that had to match that type of personality. Pitta was more “fiery” and put together, organized. Kapha, more earthy, slow, and stable. The goal of Ayurveda is to recognize what energy you have and to keep it balanced to avoid a dosha imbalance. Our goal was to capture each dosha in a way that makes sense, you can be the judge by checking out the final photos/video.
I worked alongside CHOATEHOUSE, a photo/video studio based out of Oklahoma who were amazing, friendly, and creative. I worked on the side of the set each day getting the product, packaging and behind the scenes shots. They were small areas to work in, so sometimes it got a little tight with all the equipment. All in all, it was a blast to be working with a great team of creatives, running all over NYC and thinking on the fly most of the day to come up with some powerful images. I also was assisted by Griffin Burr from the e-commerce team, who was at first was an impromptu assistant, who ended up being incredibly helpful and I could have not done it without him.
Very thankful to be involved in such a interesting and new wave of products. Stay tuned for more!
